‘Piglet trotted happily beside his best friend Pooh,
Talking about nothing much, as best friends often do.
When suddenly Pooh stopped and said, “I’ve got a Grand Idea,
I’m going to catch a Heffalump. I’ve heard they live round here.”‘
When Winnie the Pooh sets out to catch a heffalump he finds himself in a sticky situation. But thankfully his best friend Piglet will always be there by his side.
For as long as I can remember I’ve always loved Tigger from Winnie the Pooh. I never cared much for Pooh but I loved the stories for Tigger and the other characters. However looking back I think most of my Winnie the Pooh encounters have actually been on the screen. I know I’ve read some in the past but they haven\t stuck in my head for one reason or another.
This modern take on Winnie the Pooh comes from Giles Andreae, the fantastic author of Giraffes Cant Dance. And that has to be one of the reasons why I got so excited when it dropped through my letter box. I know this author and I know how well he can write and rhyme.
The Great Heffalump Hunt is clever and rhymes perfectly. The flow of it makes it perfect for bedtime reading and I love the message it puts across.
The only characters it contains are Piglet and Pooh but they are kept close to the original characters personalities. Piglet is a little scared and Pooh is greedy. The message it puts across is that even when you are scared, you will do anything for your friends and its mostly Piglets tale of bravery which I think is a great message to put across.
The illustrations are amazing and I loved the page with Piglets worries about the Heffalump. Darkness is used well to portray how scary the situation is for him then everything comes a bit brighter when the fear is gone.
This is the first Winnie the Pooh story that me and Spike have read together but I don’t think it will be the last! Im off to dig out the old copies I’m certain my sister has somewhere!
The Great Heffalump Hunt was published in April 2017 by Egmont Publishing. My copy sent to me from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
