Welcome to No Books Allowed. This is a new monthly feature hosted here, which is used to discuss things things in life which aren’t connected to books. This post can be used to talk about days out, music, TV, video games, films etc for all those book bloggers out there who do occasionally do stuff other than read and go to book events!
April has been soooo busy. I had to take a week out from blogging because things got that busy. I moved house at the beginning of the month so most of the month has been filled with packing, moving and unpacking. I love my new house and its so big, its going to be perfect
for a family when the time comes, but its just as perfect for me, my partner and my stepson for now.
The weekend after the move was spent in Edinburgh for one of my best friends Hen Weekend. I am Maid of Honour so I planned the entire thing and although we didn’t get to do much (you try organising 8 girls for an entire weekend) it was lots of fun.
Due to the time I took off work to do these wonderful things the rest of my April was pretty stressful but thankfully this past weekend and this weekend coming I have been able to chill out, catching up on reading and blogging and sort out the rest of the little bits for the house.
Days Out/Weekends away
Obviously my major event was the Hen Weekend. We went out on the Friday night with Steffi, the Bride-to-be dressed as the TARDIS and the rest of us as different periods in time (I was a cavewoman so that I could have a dinosaur with me!)
That was followed up with the Harvey Nicks Chocolate Lounge, Yo Sushi and Cocktail making on Saturday and a three course meal the saturday night. If you want to go cocktail making for a birthday party or hen party I would recommend Revolution, we had such fun even though none of us are really Revolution type people. It was a laugh and also quite educational (though I’ve forgotten half of what we learnt because we were drinking the results!)
On the Sunday me and Steffi went to Edinburgh Zoo. It was awesome and I got to see PANDAS! we were so lucky because they were just about to go into mating and if that had happened before the Sunday we wouldn’t have been able to see them!
Other than that me and my partner spent an afternoon at Brockholes Nature Reserve
near Preston and had a lovely walk. We didn’t see many birds, just a swan and a couple of geese but it was a lovely walk round and the visitor centre is a pretty awesome building to look at and walk around!
TV & Films
The new Game of Thrones series started and its amazing!!! I love that show now… I wasn’t too keen on it at first but now I can’t miss a second. This series had a little less nudity and violence than the others in the first few episodes but I get the distinct impression that that will change as it goes on.
Other than that there’s not much to report, The Walking Dead finale was interesting though a little disappointing and I’m still watching Dexter, and loving it.
Film-wise things have been a little quiet too, we watched the iSteve
movie that the website Funny or Die
did and to be honest I wasn’t that thrilled by it, it was meant to be funny but I just didn’t really think it was… though maybe it was if you’re more into Steve Jobs and Apple than I am.
I also watched Project Nim, a documentary about a professor who helped teach a chimp sign language. The documentary was more about Nim himself than the study and I thought it was really good, I just wished there was more about the language study. After watching it though I really want to watch some more documentaries about language so I may have to find some of them.
Red Lights was a late month addition movie and to be honest I kinda wasn’t impressed. The film was pretty good, until about 10 minutes before the end and the end just ruined it for me. I hate it when that happens! Sigourney Weaver and Cillian Murphy were awesome though.
This will not surprise anyone who knows me or who read my any of my earlier No Books Allowed posts but I went to see Funeral For A Friend again at the weekend. They are obviously one of my favourite bands and I am so lucky that they tour often and the ticket prices aren’t ridiculous! it was amazing as per usual but they reminded us that this year is the 10th anniversary of their first album which made me feel soooo old as I remember it coming out!
There have been new additions to my Spotify playlist too with Frank Turners newest album and Mallory Knox. I love Frank Turner and envy his voice, its so powerful and his lyrics are incredible, I can’t resist him. Mallory Knox kept popping up on the music channels with their video for Beggars which involves them dressed up as the guys from clockwork orange which instantly gave them points for being awesome!
