“Have you ever wondered why
The moon shines in the night-time sky?
How every creature, last and tree
Is subject to it’s mystery…”
Over deserts and forests, Arctic tundra and tropical beaches, the moon shines down on creatures around the world. Children will love discovering how it changes from day to day as the lunar cycle is shown through clever peek-through holes, each revealing the moon in a different size and shape.
I have heard of how amazing Britta Teckentrup’s artwork and stories are, but Moon was our first introduction to her awesomeness. We were bought this beautiful picture book by my sister for Christmas and she couldn’t have picked better for me. I absolutely adore it.
As mentioned, it follows the moon’s cycle, how it looks one way in one part of the world and a different way in another because of its lunar cycle. This is done by peek-through aspects of the pages, with different moon shapes cut out, until we come across the full moon that turtles are using to guide their way to lay their eggs in soft white sand.
The pictures, in addition to the sky, show different animals enjoying the moons glow and show how the moon helps some animals carry out certain tasks. I really loved that there was that aspect of nature and learning in the beauty pictures, and the words that glide the reader through the book are amazing too.
I absolutely loved the story of the different animals, and their habitats – sometimes changing habitats – and what it teaches about the world and how it works. I think its the perfect book for any nature lover, and any book lover too as it really is one you could stare at for hours. Spike seemed to really love the wild animals and seeing so many different types across all the pages.
It’s definitely one I’d recommend to anyone hoping for a fun way of learning more about the world and the creatures we share it with!
Moon was published by Little Tiger in September 2017. My copy was bought as a gift to my daughter for Christmas 2017.
