When Adelaide Buchman’s younger brother succumbs to a drug overdose, she saves his life. In the aftermath, looking for distraction, she becomes a stylish, bright charmer who blows off school and falls madly in love – even though her heart is shattered. Adelaide is catapulted into a summer of wild possibility, during which she will fall in and out of love a thousand times while finally confronting her brother, their history, and her own strength. A raw and funny story that will surprise you over and over, Adelaide is an indelible heroine grappling with the terrible and wonderful problem of loving other people.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from Again, Again. It sounded like an interesting concept and I knew that E Lockhart is very popular among YA readers. However I didn’t enjoy the last book I read by her as much as I wanted to. This was different though. Again, Again provided the perfect escape from reality during lockdown. It was as if Adelaide was in her own bubble of the universe, with outsiders looking in. She let people into her bubble only when she wanted to, but didn’t want to often.
The club of the book suggested that Adelaide would meet many boys and fall in love time and time again in her summer. But this wasn’t the case. The reality was in fact that there were multiple outcomes of the same situation throughout the book and this concept has always intrigued me. I loved them and the options it allowed for what the end of summer meant for Adelaide. But all of them ultimately got Adelaide to a place where I thought she needed to be. true to herself having headed bridges that have been broken.
I really enjoyed this and it was the perfect companion for a few hot summer days reading in the garden. I’d definitely recommend it as a holiday read (when we can take those again!).
My favourite aspect of the book was the art and the part art played in Adelaide’s life. I love that the author includes a note at the end of the book about where the inspiration for this came from and I will be checking those inspirations out for sure.
